The third matchday of the 2026 World Cup delivered four matches, three of which were completed before morning Kyiv time. The biggest sensation was Qatar snatching a draw against Switzerland in stoppage time, while Brazil failed to beat Morocco despite a goal from Vinícius Júnior. Scotland, meanwhile, celebrated their first World Cup win in 36 years.
Night Results
Switzerland — Qatar 1:1 (Group B)
The match in Santa Clara kicked off at 22:00 Kyiv time. Switzerland dominated throughout but had to settle for a draw after a dramatic finish. Breel Embolo converted a penalty in the 17th minute after Qatar's goalkeeper brought down Remo Freuler in the box. In the second half, Switzerland had several chances to extend their lead but failed to take them. In stoppage time — the 90+4 minute — Boualem Khoukhi rose above his marker and headed the ball into the net from a cross by Homam Al-Amin, earning Qatar their first-ever point at a World Cup. The result stunned Group B: all four teams — Switzerland, Qatar, Canada, and Bosnia and Herzegovina — are level on one point each.
Brazil — Morocco 1:1 (Group C)
The most anticipated match of the day took place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey — at 01:00 Kyiv time. Morocco opened the scoring in the 21st minute when Ayoub El Kaabi beat Brazil's goalkeeper. The five-time champions responded in the 32nd minute — Vinícius Júnior exchanged passes with Bruno Guimarães, took a few steps to wind up, and fired a powerful right-footed shot to restore parity. Morocco looked the stronger side overall, but Vinícius's individual brilliance saved Brazil. Morocco's goalkeeper Yassine Bounou suffered a shoulder injury in a collision with Raphinha and is due to undergo a medical examination the following day. Brazil extended their unbeaten run in World Cup opening matches to 21 games in a row.
Haiti — Scotland 0:1 (Group C)
In Foxborough, Massachusetts, at 04:00 Kyiv time, Scotland claimed their first World Cup win since 1990. The only goal was scored by John McGinn in the 28th minute: after a long pass from Grant Hanley, Che Adams shot at the goalkeeper, and McGinn tucked away the rebound. Haiti had the edge in possession (56% to 44%) and more shots overall (15 to 9), but Scotland's defence did not allow their opponents to convert any of them. Scotland top Group C after the first round.
Australia — Turkey (Group D)
At the time of publication, the match between Australia and Turkey in Vancouver is still in progress (kick-off at 07:00 Kyiv time); the result will be in the daytime news bulletin.
Standings
Group B
After two matches played, all four teams are level on one point: Switzerland, Qatar, Canada, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The group is wide open — no team holds an advantage ahead of the next round.
Group C
