Germany vs Ivory Coast and Three More Matches: A Game Night at the World Cup

All News from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Mundial Today

Saturday, June 20 is a packed matchday at the 2026 World Cup: four matches across two groups where nothing has been decided yet. The main storyline of the evening is the clash between the two Group E leaders, Germany and Ivory Coast, at 23:00 Kyiv time in Toronto. And later in the night comes a match with a legend built into the schedule: Tunisia vs Japan will be the 1,000th fixture in World Cup history.

Day's Schedule

  • 20:00 Kyiv time. Netherlands — Sweden (Group F, Matchday 2) — NRG Stadium, Houston
  • 23:00 Kyiv time. Germany — Ivory Coast (Group E, Matchday 2) — BMO Field, Toronto
  • 03:00 Kyiv time (June 21). Ecuador — Curaçao (Group E, Matchday 2) — Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City
  • 07:00 Kyiv time (June 21). Tunisia — Japan (Group F, Matchday 2) — Estadio BBVA, Monterrey

Netherlands — Sweden | 20:00 Kyiv Time | Group F

What's at stake. Sweden lead Group F after a dominant 5–1 win over Tunisia in the opening round. The Netherlands drew 2–2 with Japan and have just one point, desperately needing three. A Dutch win would level them with Sweden; a defeat would leave them in a dangerous position heading into the final round.

Form and personnel. Sweden looked convincing: five goals in their first match — the best opening-round performance in Group F. The Netherlands, despite the draw, showed attacking potential and will be looking to bounce back. Starting line-ups were expected but had not been officially announced at the time of publication.

One to watch. The Swedish attack that tore Tunisia apart against the Dutch defence that conceded twice to Japan — that is the central duel of this match.

Germany — Ivory Coast | 23:00 Kyiv Time | Group E

What's at stake. Both teams have 3 points after the first round: Germany thrashed Curaçao 7–1, while Ivory Coast beat Ecuador 1–0 in stoppage time. The winner of this match will virtually secure a place in the knockout stage and stake a claim for top spot in the group. A draw keeps everything open until the third round.

Form and personnel. Germany looked formidable: seven goals on their tournament debut — the biggest first-round win across all groups. Ivory Coast showed character by scoring the winning goal in the 90th minute. Both managers are expected to name unchanged starting line-ups.

One to watch. Florian Wirtz, who assisted Germany's first goal against Curaçao, against the Ivory Coast defence — the key duel of the match. From the African side, expect the quick counter-attacks that already paid dividends in the first round.

Ecuador — Curaçao | 03:00 Kyiv Time (June 21) | Group E

Ecuador are pointless after their defeat to Ivory Coast and are under pressure: only a win keeps them in contention. Curaçao, making their tournament debut, also have no points after being hammered by Germany. The match in Kansas City is a chance for both teams to get off the mark, but for Ecuador it is effectively a must-win.

Tunisia — Japan | 07:00 Kyiv Time (June 21) | Group F

This match in Monterrey will go down in history: it will be the 1,000th fixture in World Cup history. Japan, after their draw with the Netherlands (2–2), have one point and need a win to keep pace with the leaders. Tunisia lost 1–5 to Sweden and are at risk of an early exit. Japan's squad is reported to have several injured players, so the expected line-up is yet to be confirmed.

Results from all matches will be covered in the evening edition of Nightly Mundial and in the morning digest on June 21 at mundialtoday.com.
