Spain vs Belgium: World Cup 2026 quarter-final

What's at stake. Spain are aiming to reach the World Cup semi-finals for the first time since 2010. Belgium want to achieve what the Red Devils have never managed: winning the World Cup. The winner will play France in Dallas on Tuesday, July 14.

Form and squads. Spain have gone five matches at this tournament without conceding a single goal — a record run of six consecutive clean sheets at World Cups. Goalkeeper Unai Simón has saved all five shots on target. La Roja's main injury concern is the absence of Nico Williams, who has not featured in any of the knockout rounds due to an injury sustained in the group stage; Alex Baena is expected to start on the left wing. Belgium have suffered a serious blow: Amadou Onana is out for the rest of the tournament with a torn cruciate ligament. However, Kevin De Bruyne returns after coach Rudi Garcia rested him strategically in the match against the USA.

Star duel. The central intrigue is a clash of systems: Spain's structure marshalled by Rodri against a Belgian attack once again led by De Bruyne. Charles De Ketelaere scored twice and provided an assist in the round of 16 against the USA — the best individual performance in the knockout rounds. Lamine Yamal and Baena on the flanks pose a constant threat to the Belgian defence. Romelu Lukaku looks set to come off the bench again and could prove decisive in the closing stages. Looking ahead: Saturday, July 11

After today's match, the tournament keeps rolling. Saturday brings a double-header: Norway vs England (Hard Rock Stadium, Miami, 5 p.m. ET = 00:00 Kyiv time, midnight Saturday into Sunday) and Argentina vs Switzerland (Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City, 9 p.m. ET = 04:00 Kyiv time on Sunday). Erling Haaland, with seven goals in four matches, is Norway's main weapon against Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham. Read the full preview of Saturday's matches here.
