England — bronze: 6:4 in the highest-scoring playoff match of WC-2026
In the early hours of Sunday (kick-off at 00:00 Kyiv time, final whistle around 02:10) at Miami Stadium, the third-place match took place. England defeated France 6:4 — the first World Cup match with 10 or more goals since 1982, when Hungary thrashed El Salvador 10:1. For England, it is their best World Cup result since 1966, when the Three Lions lifted the trophy.
Bukayo Saka scored a hat-trick, becoming only the second Englishman after Geoff Hurst (1966 final) to net three times in a World Cup playoff match. Declan Rice opened the scoring as early as the 3rd minute, Ezri Konsa doubled the lead in the 18th, and Saka struck twice before the break — 4:0. After the interval, France made four substitutions simultaneously and clawed back: Mbappé (48', 66') and Barcola (54') made it 4:3. Saka converted a penalty in the 87th minute (5:3), Dembélé replied in stoppage time (5:4), but Bellingham had the final say — 6:4.
Kylian Mbappé's brace took him to the top of the all-time World Cup top scorers list — 22 goals, surpassing Messi (at least until the final). Michaël Olise set an all-time record: 7 assists in a single tournament — more than Pelé in 1970. For Jude Bellingham, 7 goals in the tournament is the most by an Englishman in a single edition of the World Cup or Euros.
Didier Deschamps ends his tenure as France national team manager
The match in Miami was the 187th and last for Didier Deschamps as head coach of Les Bleus. The French manager had been in charge since 2012, winning the 2018 World Cup and reaching the Euro 2020 final, and set the record for the most World Cup matches managed — 26 games. The 4:6 defeat was the heaviest in terms of goals conceded throughout his entire tenure.
