Group F and E: who leads after the first round and what is decided tonight

2026 FIFA World Cup Analytics

The ninth matchday of the 2026 World Cup has already delivered several important results: the USA secured a place in the knockout round after beating Australia, Brazil topped Group C after thrashing Haiti, and Paraguay held firm against Turkey. But the main tournament intrigue of the evening is still to come — at 20:00 Kyiv time the Netherlands face Sweden (Group F), and at 23:00 Germany take on Côte d'Ivoire (Group E). Both matches have the potential to significantly reshape the standings.

Group F: Netherlands, Japan, Sweden, Tunisia

After the first round, Group F remains wide open: the Netherlands and Japan drew 2–2, while Sweden thrashed Tunisia 5–1. Heading into the second round, Sweden lead with 3 points, the Netherlands and Japan have 1 point each, and Tunisia have 0. Tonight at 20:00 Kyiv time, the Netherlands meet Sweden in Houston — effectively a match for the top spot. Simultaneously, at 07:00 on June 21, Tunisia face Japan in Monterrey: the Japanese need a win to avoid dropping to the bottom of the group.

After their draw with Japan, the Netherlands cannot afford another slip — a defeat to Sweden would leave them in a very uncomfortable position heading into the final round. Sweden, on the other hand, come into this match from a position of strength following their big win over Tunisia (+4 goal difference) and can cement their lead tonight.

Group E: Germany, Côte d'Ivoire, Ecuador, Curaçao

In Group E, the picture after the first round is clearer: Germany demolished Curaçao 7–1, while Côte d'Ivoire beat Ecuador 1–0. Heading into the second round, Germany and Côte d'Ivoire both have 3 points, while Ecuador and Curaçao have 0. At 23:00 Kyiv time in Toronto, the two group leaders will go head to head — Germany vs. Côte d'Ivoire. The winner will effectively secure a place in the knockout round, while the loser will be forced to fight for second place in the final round.

Simultaneously, at 03:00 on June 21, Ecuador face Curaçao — a must-win match for both sides. Ecuador, following their defeat to Côte d'Ivoire, need three points to keep their qualification hopes alive, including via the best third-place ranking.

Scenarios

  • Netherlands beat Sweden — the "Oranje" move to 4 points and become favourites in Group F. Sweden, with 3 points, hold their position but cannot afford to relax in the final round against Japan.
  • Netherlands–Sweden draw — both teams sit on 2 points, and Group F turns into an open race going into the final round. Japan, with a win over Tunisia, could even take the lead.
  • Germany beat Côte d'Ivoire — the "Mannschaft" with 6 points from two games virtually guarantee first place. Côte d'Ivoire, with 3 points, hold second place but cannot afford to lose in the final round against Ecuador.

The race for the eight best third-place spots

At this stage of the tournament, most groups have yet to complete the second round, so the third-place ranking is taking shape gradually. It is already clear that teams with zero points after two rounds — such as Tunisia in Group F or Curaçao in Group E — will face serious pressure: even a win in the final match will yield only 3 points, which may not be enough to make the top eight third-place sides. Teams with 1–2 points after two rounds, however, have a genuine chance of clinging to that line.

Tonight, watch above all for the character of the Netherlands' performance: can they impose their tempo on Sweden after a flat draw against Japan? And will Côte d'Ivoire prove that their win over Ecuador was no fluke, but a systematic result? Tomorrow morning the results of Tunisia–Japan and Ecuador–Curaçao will be added, and the picture in Groups E and F will become much clearer.
