Dembélé hat-trick, Spain top group: World Cup 2026 night digest

2026 FIFA World Cup Overnight News

The headline moment of the night was Ousmane Dembélé's phenomenal hat-trick in the match Norway — France 1:4. The 2025 Ballon d'Or winner found the net three times before the 32nd minute, sending Les Bleus to the top of Group I with a perfect record across three matches. Meanwhile, Spain — Uruguay 1:0 and Senegal — Iraq 5:0 sealed the fates of Groups H and I respectively. The full World Cup 2026 match schedule (Kyiv time) is available on our website.

Night results

Norway — France 1:4 (Group I)

Kick-off at 22:00 Kyiv time, Boston (Foxborough). France took to the pitch without head coach Didier Deschamps, who remained in his home country following the death of his mother; assistant Guy Stéphan led the side. Norway made 10 rotations and left Erling Haaland and Martin Ødegaard on the bench. As early as the 22nd second, Kylian Mbappé struck the crossbar, and in the 7th minute Dembélé opened the scoring after a pass from Mbappé. He doubled the lead in the 20th minute; in the 21st, Telo Osgor pulled one back to make it 2:1, but by the 32nd Dembélé had completed his hat-trick — the second fastest in the first half in World Cup history. In the 49th minute Norway failed to convert a penalty: Jørgen Strand Larsen's effort was saved by goalkeeper Mike Maignan. In stoppage time, Désiré Doué headed in the final goal to make it 4:1. Dembélé now has four goals at the tournament. France finished the group stage with nine points and advance to the round of 32 as group winners.

Senegal — Iraq 5:0 (Group I)

Kick-off at 22:00 Kyiv time, Toronto (BMO Field). Senegal produced the most high-scoring match of the night: Hamza Diarra scored in the 4th minute, Ismaïla Sarr in the 56th, Pape Gueye in the 59th and 71st, and Iliman Ndiaye in the 82nd. Iraq finished the group stage without a single point. The victory gave Senegal a genuine chance of reaching the round of 32 as one of the eight best third-placed teams.

Spain — Uruguay 1:0 (Group H)

Kick-off at 22:00 Kyiv time, Guadalajara (Estadio Akron). Spain, who had already secured their place in the knockout stage, clinched first place in Group H. The match's only goal decided the result in favour of La Furia Roja. Uruguay, despite the defeat, retained their chances of advancing as one of the best third-placed teams.

Cape Verde — Saudi Arabia 0:0 (Group H)

Kick-off at 22:00 Kyiv time, Houston (NRG Stadium). A goalless draw brought the group stage to a close for both sides. Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia are eliminated from the tournament.

Belgium — New Zealand 5:1 (Group G)

Kick-off at 06:00 Kyiv time, Vancouver (BC Place). The Red Devils delivered their most convincing performance of the group stage: Leandro Trossard scored twice, Romelu Lukaku added a header, and Alexis Saelemaekers rounded off the rout. Elijah Just scored the only reply. The 5:1 win, combined with a draw in the parallel match, lifted Belgium to the top of Group G on goal difference.

Egypt — Iran 1:1 (Group G)

Kick-off at 06:00 Kyiv time, Seattle (Lumen Field). A dramatic match with a VAR twist in added time. Iran thought they had scored a winner in stoppage time: Shoja Khalilzadeh's shot after a rebound crossed the line, but after a VAR review the player was ruled offside. The 1:1 draw left Iran in limbo — the team awaits the decision on the best third-placed sides. Egypt advance to the round of 32 in second place. Mo Salah was substituted in the 57th minute due to a calf muscle problem.

Group standings

Group I (completed): France — 9 points (1st place), Norway — 6 (2nd place), Senegal — 3 (3rd place, in contention to advance), Iraq — 0 (eliminated).

Group H (completed): Spain — 7 points (1st place), Uruguay — 4 (3rd place, in contention to advance), Cape Verde — 2 (eliminated), Saudi Arabia — 1 (eliminated).

Group G (completed): Belgium — 5 points (1st place, on goal difference), Egypt — 5 (2nd place, advancing), Iran — 2 (3rd place, awaiting decision), New Zealand — 1 (eliminated).

Off the pitch

  • Didier Deschamps returns. France's head coach missed the match against Norway following the death of his mother. Assistant Guy Stéphan confirmed that Deschamps will rejoin the squad on Saturday ahead of the next training session.
  • Mo Salah in doubt. Egypt's captain left the field in the 57th minute of the match against Iran with a calf muscle problem. The Liverpool star's condition will be assessed ahead of the round of 32.
  • Ezatolahi suspension. Iranian midfielder Saeid Ezatolahi received his second yellow card of the tournament and will miss the next match if Iran progress to the knockout stage.
  • "Pride match" in Seattle. The Egypt — Iran match in Seattle was given the unofficial status of a "Pride match" by the local organising committee. The Iranian Football Federation formally requested FIFA to ban LGBTQ+ flags inside the stadium — FIFA rejected the request.
