Spain, Portugal and Switzerland advance to the Round of 16: a night at the World Cup

2026 FIFA World Cup Overnight News

Three Round of 32 matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup concluded overnight according to the 2026 World Cup match schedule in Kyiv time: Spain, Portugal and Switzerland all secured their places in the Round of 16. The most dramatic encounter took place in Toronto, where Gonçalo Ramos broke Croatian resistance with a header in the 90+4th minute. Full details on all the results are below.

Overnight results

Spain — Austria 3–0

The match at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles kicked off at 22:00 Kyiv time. Spain took the initiative from the first whistle but only managed to open the scoring in the 36th minute, when Mikel Oyarzabal converted a cutback from Cucurella. Before the break, Alex Baena struck the crossbar from a free kick and Lamine Yamal hit the post after a follow-up effort. In the 66th minute, Pedro Porro headed home a Baena delivery to make it 2–0. Oyarzabal put the game to bed in the 89th minute, again capitalising on a Cucurella cross. Austria, appearing in the knockout rounds of a World Cup for the first time in 72 years, are eliminated. Yamal was named Man of the Match.

Portugal — Croatia 2–1

The match at BMO Field in Toronto kicked off at 02:00 Kyiv time. The first half ended goalless, although Portugal held a significant xG advantage. In the 53rd minute, Ivan Perišić opened the scoring by converting a cutback from Stanišić. Portugal responded with a penalty: in the 68th minute Nikola Vlašić brought down Renato Veiga in the box, and Cristiano Ronaldo converted the spot kick — 1–1. Coach Roberto Martínez substituted Ronaldo in the 81st minute, and it was substitute Gonçalo Ramos who decided the tie: in the 90+4th minute he headed home a Rafa Leão cross — 2–1. In stoppage time Croatia had three goals disallowed for offside, including one right at the end following a VAR review. It was Ronaldo's first goal in World Cup knockout rounds in his career.

Switzerland — Algeria 2–0

The match at BC Place in Vancouver kicked off at 06:00 Kyiv time. Switzerland opened the scoring on the counter-attack: Johan Manzambi broke into a shooting position and found Breel Embolo for a simple tap-in. Algeria had their chances — Riyad Mahrez failed to connect with a cutback early on — but could not convert them. The final score of 2–0 sent Switzerland through to the Round of 16. For Murat Yakin's side it is their third consecutive win at a single World Cup — a first in the team's history.

Tournament picture

Spain advance to the Round of 16, where they will face Portugal — an opponent confirmed after the Seleção's victory over Croatia. The match will be held in Dallas. Austria are eliminated from the tournament. Portugal continue their campaign and will face Spain in the Round of 16. Croatia are knocked out: three disallowed goals in a single match became the symbol of the team's misfortune. Switzerland will face the winner of the Colombia–Ghana tie in the Round of 16. Algeria are eliminated from the 2026 World Cup — the African side had not beaten a European opponent at a World Cup since 1982.

Off the pitch

  • Yamal — Man of the Match in Spain vs Austria. The Barcelona forward said after the game: "The World Cup starts now" — a quote confirmed by ESPN. Spain remain the only team in the tournament not to have conceded a single goal, and their unbeaten run in competitive matches has now reached 34 games.
  • Ronaldo enters the top 10 all-time World Cup scorers. His penalty in the 68th minute against Croatia moved the Portuguese star into the top ten goalscorers in World Cup history.
  • VAR controversy in Portugal vs Croatia. Croatia had three goals disallowed for offside in a single match — a record for the knockout rounds. The final disallowance in added time following a VAR review drew a sharp reaction from the Croatian camp.
  • Mohamed Salah could feature against Australia. According to ESPN, the Egyptian forward has recovered from a hamstring injury and is likely to be included in the squad for today's Round of 32 match against Australia, although coach Hossam Hassan has not confirmed the starting line-up.

Today, 3 July, three Round of 32 matches are scheduled at the World Cup: Australia vs Egypt (21:00 Kyiv time), Argentina vs Cape Verde (01:00 on 4 July, Kyiv time) and Colombia vs Ghana (04:30 on 4 July, Kyiv time). A detailed preview will appear in the evening preview column.
