The second night of matches at the 2026 World Cup delivered two completely different games. The USA put on a show at SoFi Stadium, thrashing Paraguay 4:1 and setting a new scoring record for the national team at World Cups. Meanwhile, in Toronto, hosts Canada trailed for most of the match but snatched a 1:1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina thanks to a lightning-fast impact from substitute Cyle Larin — earning a World Cup point for the first time in their history.
Night Results
USA — Paraguay 4:1 (Group D)
The match at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, started at a blistering pace: as early as the 7th minute, a cross from Christian Pulisic deflected off Damián Bobadilla into his own net — the fastest goal the USA have ever scored at a World Cup. On the 30th minute, Folarin Balogun, played through one-on-one by that same Pulisic, doubled the lead, and on the 45th minute he scored again — heading into the break with a brace. Balogun became the first American to score two goals in a single World Cup match since 1930. In the second half, Paraguay pulled one back — Mauricio converted a chance on the 73rd minute — but Joe Reyna put the finishing touch to seal a 4:1 scoreline. USA head coach Mauricio Pochettino said after the match: "In the first half we were incredible. It's hard to find a team that plays the same way." This is the first time the USA have scored four goals in a single World Cup match.
Canada — Bosnia and Herzegovina 1:1 (Group B)
At Toronto Stadium (BMO Field), Bosnia and Herzegovina took the lead as early as the 21st minute: Jovo Lukić headed home from a corner — his first international goal. Canada pressed, had more shots and more accurate passes, but could not equalize until the 78th minute. That's when coach Jesse Marsch brought on Cyle Larin, and just 121 seconds after coming on, he finished off a combination with Jonathan David to find the net — first touch, first goal. Canada earned a World Cup point for the first time in their history: in their two previous appearances (1986 and 2022) they lost all six matches. It is worth noting that star defender Alphonso Davies missed the game through injury.

Off the Pitch

Alphonso Davies out through injury. Canada played without their most high-profile player — defender Alphonso Davies, who missed the match due to injury. His absence was clearly felt in the hosts' attacking output.
FIFA statement on stadium attendance. Amid reports of empty seats during the tournament's opening matches, FIFA released an official statement explaining that official attendance figures reflect the number of scanned tickets rather than a visual assessment of occupied seats. The organization also noted that some spectators were in concession areas during the matches.
Three red cards in Mexico vs. South Africa. The opening match on June 11 left its mark in the record books: three red cards in a single game — something that had not happened at a World Cup since 2006 (Portugal vs. Netherlands).
