Norway knocked out Brazil, England held on in Mexico: a night at the World Cup

2026 FIFA World Cup Overnight News

The night of 5–6 July delivered two Round of 16 matches at the 2026 World Cup that will go down in history: Norway reached the quarter-finals for the first time in their footballing history, while England held on with ten men against the tournament hosts at the legendary Azteca stadium. For those following the 2026 World Cup schedule in Kyiv time, both matches finished well after midnight in Kyiv.

Night results

Brazil 1–2 Norway (MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, USA)

Kick-off was at 23:00 Kyiv time (16:00 ET). The first half ended goalless, though Bruno Guimarães missed a penalty for Brazil early on — goalkeeper Nyland saved the effort. Norway seized the initiative in the second half, and on the 79th minute Erling Haaland headed home a cross from Andreas Sjelderup — 0–1. On the 90th minute the Manchester City striker finished a counter-attack with a low shot to complete his brace — 0–2. Neymar came off the bench and converted a penalty in stoppage time, but it proved only a consolation — 1–2. The final score was confirmed by ESPN and CBS Sports.

Haaland took his tournament tally to seven goals, drawing level in the top-scorers race with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé. For Norway, this is their first ever quarter-final appearance at a World Cup — and their first knockout-stage win at a World Cup. Brazil were eliminated in the Round of 16 for the first time since 1990.

Mexico 2–3 England (Estadio Azteca, Mexico City)

Kick-off was delayed by around an hour due to a storm and started at approximately 04:00 Kyiv time (21:00 ET). Jude Bellingham scored twice in 98 seconds in the first half to put England ahead — 0–2. Julián Quiñones pulled one back to make it 1–2. On the 60th minute Harry Kane converted a penalty after a foul on Anthony Gordon — 1–3. On the 54th minute defender Jarrell Quansah received a straight red card following a VAR review for a tackle on Jesús Gallardo — England were reduced to ten men. Raúl Jiménez converted a penalty on the 69th minute to make it 2–3, but England held on until the final whistle. The score was confirmed by englandfootball.com and ESPN.

Quansah became the fourth England player to be sent off at a World Cup and the first since Wayne Rooney in 2006. For Mexico, it was their first defeat at the Azteca in a World Cup match. England advanced to the quarter-finals, where they will face Norway.
