USA — Round of 16, Balogun suspended: WC 2026 match schedule by…

All News from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Mundial Today

The USA advanced to the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup after defeating Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 in Santa Clara, but the match was overshadowed by a controversial red card shown to forward Folarin Balogun. Meanwhile, today, July 2, the WC 2026 match schedule (Kyiv time) features three more Round of 32 fixtures.

USA – Bosnia 2-0: victory with ten men and Balogun's suspension

The match ended after 08:00 Kyiv time and did not make the morning digest. Folarin Balogun opened the scoring in the 45th minute — his third goal of the tournament. However, in the 64th minute, Brazilian referee Rafael Claus, following a VAR review, showed the American a straight red card for stepping on the foot of defender Tariq Muharemović. Malik Tillman converted a free kick in the 81st minute to make it 2-0 — only the USA's second ever win in a World Cup knockout match.

USA head coach Mauricio Pochettino firmly rejected the validity of the dismissal at the post-match press conference: "For me, it was never a red card. There was no intention to step on the player." Pochettino also noted that Balogun was "upset and disappointed" but happy that the team had progressed. Under FIFA regulations, an appeal against an automatic suspension for this type of offence is not possible — the forward will miss the Round of 16 match against Belgium.

Balogun leads the USA's scoring charts with three goals in four tournament matches. His red card was the 12th of this World Cup — and all 12 have been straight red cards.
