USA Thrash Paraguay 4:1 — World Cup Record for the Hosts

All News from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Mundial Today

The afternoon edition of "Night Mundial" opens with a result the morning digest didn't have time to cover: in the early hours of June 13 (the final whistle sounded after 08:00 Kyiv time), the United States demolished Paraguay 4:1 at a stadium in Los Angeles, simultaneously setting a scoring record for the American team at FIFA World Cups. Meanwhile, Canada drew 1:1 with Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto.

USA — Paraguay 4:1: A Record-Breaking Win for the Hosts

The Americans took to the field under enormous expectation and responded with a brilliant first half. As early as the 6th minute the scoring was opened — an own goal by Paraguayan midfielder Damián Bobadilla. Folarin Balogun then struck twice to put the USA 3:0 up before the break. In the second half Paraguay pulled one back, but Joe Reyna had the final say, finishing with a spectacular rabona to make it 4:1.

This is the first time in history that the United States have scored four goals in a single World Cup match. According to CNN, Balogun became only the second American after Bert Patenaude (1930) to score more than one goal in a single World Cup game. The result is also the USA's biggest World Cup victory — level with their wins over Paraguay and Belgium in 1930.

Coach Mauricio Pochettino held a post-match press conference; according to Bleacher Report, a separate topic was the form of Christian Pulisic, who was active on the left flank and assisted on several goals.

Canada — Bosnia and Herzegovina 1:1: The Hosts' Debut in Toronto

Alongside the American triumph, Canada began their home World Cup in Toronto. Bosnian Jovo Lukić opened the scoring with a header in the 21st minute, but Cyle Larin equalized with a fine goal. The match ended 1:1. In Group B, which also features Qatar and Switzerland, both Canada and Bosnia started the tournament with one point each.
